Chinle, a 1982 R.C. Gorman lithograph, depicts two seated Navajo women in flowing turquoise-blue dresses against a sweeping desert landscape, their heads bent together in quiet companionship. Their long dark hair drapes across their shoulders and flows to the ground, with bare feet tucked beneath the folds of fabric. A bold black-on-terracotta Acoma olla painted with flowing bird motifs sits on the earth beside them, while the background rises into deep burgundy and plum canyon walls behind a pale tan desert floor. Signed and numbered from a limited edition, Chinle is a striking mid-career Gorman acquisition for collectors of Gorman Navajo community imagery, Southwest pottery art, and Native American fine art lithographs.
