Damita State I, a 1979 R.C. Gorman serigraph, is a bold and dramatic standing figure of a Navajo woman caught mid gesture, her head tilted skyward and her right hand raised as if in song or rapture. She wears a flowing coral red dress belted at the waist, rendered with the crisp flat color fields and heavy black outlines that define Gorman’s serigraph vocabulary. Dark hair pulled into a low tail frames her warm face and throat. A moody gray violet background isolates the figure and lets the coral dress sing. As State I of the Damita series, this serigraph is a showstopper acquisition for collectors of Gorman serigraphs, Southwest fine art, and bold Native American figurative prints.
