Angelina (color)

Angelina (color) is a 1974 R.C. Gorman lithograph that reveals the artist at his most painterly and gestural. The image is a close, cinematic view of a woman’s face and dark tumbling hair rendered almost entirely in expressive dry-brush strokes of deep aubergine, olive, and cream, with warm ochre catching the cheekbone and profile. The composition flirts with abstraction, trusting the viewer to read a figure out of sweeps of pigment. From a small, coveted edition of only 70 (approx. 22 x 30 in.), this early-1970s lithograph is a rare, expressionistic piece prized by collectors of experimental Gorman works, gestural portraits, and early R.C.
