“Lila St II,” a 1981 lithograph by R.C. Gorman, is the second state of the Lila series and shares its essential composition with Lila St I: a Navajo woman reclining with her back to the viewer, chin on hand, one foot visible at lower left. In this state, however, the palette is dramatically richer: a soft rose-pink blouse is set against a voluminous golden-yellow skirt in deep ochre folds, while the background shifts to a cool gray-blue sky above a sandy tan ground. The cooler sky introduces a tension between warmth and coolness absent from St I, making this state visually bolder and more atmospheric. A compelling companion to Lila St I and an essential acquisition for collectors of Gorman lithograph pairs, Southwest fine art, and Native American figurative prints.
