Madrid by R.C. Gorman, 1997 lithograph. A Navajo woman reclines horizontally across a luminous landscape, her form draped in a rich crimson red blanket or rebozo that contrasts strikingly with the cool purple and lavender hills beyond. She rests in peaceful repose, her body language communicating ease and trust as she inhabits the high desert terrain. The sky above transitions from clear turquoise blue to soft peachy tones at the horizon, suggesting either dawn or dusk. The distant mesa and rolling purple foothills create spatial depth and context for the resting figure. Gorman’s compositional mastery allows the figure to become landscape and landscape to become figure. A haunting and contemplative work for collectors of Gorman lithographs and Southwest fine art.
