Tonto Pot St I, 1979, by R.C. Gorman is the first state of a two-part lithographic series exploring the relationship between figure and vessel. A woman seated against a pale ground displays a decorated Tonto pot beside her, rendered in warm earth tones with geometric patterns in brown and black. The woman’s white wrapped garment emphasizes her serene posture and the dignity of her bearing. The Tonto pottery is a fine example of Southwestern pueblo craftsmanship, rendered in precise detail. This State I version features particular proportions and details that differ from State II. Collectors of Gorman’s pottery-figure dialogues and Southwest indigenous material culture prize this work.
